If I were to have a HDD or SSD, it would be pretty straight forward to merge the partitions, unlike what I have faced due to the way “coreStorage” reservation. However when you try and create a partition, it will reserve the OS installed part of HDD and entire SSD as “core storage” which can never be merged with the partitioned part the only way is to format the entire drive. With a single partition the OS sees the combination as a single drive FusionDrive. In my case, size of SSD was 128G and HDD was 1TB. My HD turned out to be a Fusion Drive Apple’s custom implementation of a Hybrid Drive which is a combination of a smaller SSD (Flash) drive and larger traditional HDD.
